20 weeks old

Daisy continues her foundation skills:

  • Sit

  • Down

  • Wait

  • Heel

  • Look at me

  • Doorbell

  • Shake

  • Leave it

  • Nice walk

  • Off

  • Come

  • Stay

  • Back up

  • Kennel

  • Stay

  • Backup

  • Open & Close Door

  • Confidence

  • Home

  • Off leash

  • NOW!

This week we concentrated on one new skill and reviewing previous skills.

The new skill is called "NOW!".   This, hopefully, will not be used too often.  Daisy's client uses a walker and at times feels like some people walking toward her are not paying attention.  This fear has caused some intense moments.  Daisy's job?  With the command, "NOW!" Daisy will quickly move in front of the walker and create a safe space between oncoming people and the client.  As needed, Daisy will know when to bark if someone comes too close.

This weeks' continued exposure to gain confidence took place walking, jogging and sprinting.  Walks on a daily basis to continue to desensitize her to distractions.

One such walk in Cayucos provided plenty of opportunities. As it turned out, the streets were crowded with large trucks of various kinds.  Daisy is not crazy about big trucks and the noise. Little by little she is coming around where once she cowered at the noise and motion of big trucks, to now stopping and sitting at my feet.  When this happens I stop and talk her through the event.  Daisy is still unsure, but doing much better.

Madi, our youngest trainer, has started to take Daisy on a jog to the beach and back.  It's only about 0.8 miles so not too far for an almost 5 month old puppy.  This trip is often slowed down with people wanting to ask about Daisy, and of course, photos.

Another skills I've started is some work without Daisy without being attached to the leash.  I'll have Daisy sit and wait while I walk away, Now I'm backing up and reminding her to wait.  Eventually I'll turn by back without reminding her to wait.  Once I'm in position, I'll release her with, "Daisy, release", and reward when she comes to me and sits.

Overall, Daisy is right on, if not ahead of schedule, in her development.

Daisy's Digs

A Puppies' Point of View

                                        By Daisy D.

Again, this week we walked and walked.  I think I'm getting used to leading human Ray around.  Well, I'm not really leading, I walk next to him so he won't fall over.  One time I has human ray to the place where the Big Water was right at the building.  I like this place, normally, but this day something was different.

Some of you know I'm not happy when big trucks come at me.  Well, this day there were big truck everywhere!  At first I thought I was shrinking again, but then I remembered, nope.  So then I thought the big truck are there to get me!  So I stopped by human Ray's foot.  I like his feet, they make me feel safe.  So I sat there until the big trucks went away.  Human Ray made himself short and talked to me but this sounds were like, "Blaw, blaw, blaw, etc.", that's what I heard, maybe because I was scared.  I guess it is possible that human Ray was scared too and he just couldn't form his words.  I'm not sure.

There was one other thing that human Ray did to me.  He would have me sit in front of him, but not face to face which I really like because then I can lick his beard, but I was not looking at his face.  Then from behind me, he said "NOW!".  You know, human Ray is getting quite old so maybe this is just a moment.  Not sure.  Maybe next week I'll figure out if human Ray is OK.

Looking out for big trucks,

                                        Daisy
