Daisy's Thoughts

Once again, a holiday week!  We were all excited to see 2020 in the rear-view mirror!  Daisy, however, retreated to her kennel about 9pm.  Well, she saw New York ring in the new year.

Our yearly holiday visitor Fitz continues his vacation with us.  There was nice change this week with the two dogs.  Daisy was settled enough to work on her skills without too much energy directed at Fitz.  This is a positive change.  As you recall, a major part of Daisy's training is to become so accustomed with distractions, people, cars, cats, dogs, etc. that nothing will bother her as she is working.  With the maturity of a 9 month old, Daisy is doing very well.

We continued to work on basic skills throughout the holiday season.  We included Fitz in several training sessions.  One, in particular, I had Fitz settle on the opposite side of the training gate.  Daisy, wanting to play, was able to practice opening the gate multiple times.  This next week I will install pull ropes on all the doors to give Daisy additional practice.

The other skill we worked on was button pushing.  This skill will be needed opening automatic doors opened by pushing a button located on the wall next to the door.  Daisy has pretty much mastered this skill.  This week, during our walks, Daisy is pushing the crosswalk button to cross Highway 1 pretty well.

Daisy's Digs

A Puppies' Point of View

                                        By Daisy D.

One day I met this big fluffy dog.  His name is Fitz.  His real name is Fitzgerald Rosenthal, but I just call him Fitz.

So I got thinking the other day when we walked to the big water, what is Fitz doing here?  I like him a lot, but I wonder if he is here to watch me?  Or, is he here to show me something?  I noticed that when Human Ray took me places in his truck, Fitz was right next to me.  Then I said to myself, "Bark!", is Fitz moving in this place?

Then I thought of something else!  Is Fitz here so I can show him some of the things the humans ask me to do?  Fitz is bigger than me.  Fitz is older than me.  Fitz has more hair than me.  What could I show him?  When Human Ray askes me to help him around the house Fitz is always there but just watching.  Then it hit me!  Fitz doesn't know how to open the door, or the gate or push the big button!  That's it!

So while Fitz is here I get to help him learn by doing what the humans ask me to do.  I can open the gate and the door.  I can push the big button too!  Now I can teach Fitz all of these things.

I'm not going to tell Human Ray, but I really don't want to teach Fitz to eat my treats.  I think I'll just eat my treats really fast.

Sometimes it's hard being a growing puppy.
