Daisy's Thoughts

Another big week for Daisy!  One of the many jobs she will have for her client is traveling with her using local public transportation.

Daisy has had several trips riding the bus with me, sniffing the bus and hearing all the associated noises.  This week Daisy experienced the whole package.  For the first time she rode the lift up and down.  In addition, we traveled to the city of Cambria up the coast to explore.

To get her ready for this skill, Daisy has been working on numerous pre-skills.  Early in her life we started having her make eye contact. Simple, but very important for Daisy to look back and check with her client.  This lets her client know she is engaged in the activity.  Daisy is comfortable walking beside the walker at about heel position, this came from months of practice.  She has had hours of walking with noise practice, from cars, machines, airplanes, children screaming to animals barking.  In addition, to aide in preparing for the movement of the platform, Daisy has experience riding elevators, moving staircases, walking bridges and riding a skateboard.  All of these tasks made it easier for Daisy to be successful on her first time on the public transportation bus lift.

Overall, the day's training was very successful.  Over the next several weeks Daisy and I will continue to use the bus as we go train.  The next trip will to head to San Luis Obispo to work in more crowded situations and to practice using the round door opening button at the bank.

Daisy's Digs
A Puppies' Point of View
                                        By Daisy D.

It looks to me that since I'm a big one-year-old that I get to do more things than when I was a little puppy.

Again this week, I did more and more.  One day human Ray and human Stacy went with me to a place called Cambria.  I've been here before, but I wanted to go back because all the stores smell so good!  The best part is when we go in one of the stores and the human there gives me a doggie treat.  Most of the treats are really good!  However, some of them I don't like so I spit it out right there on the floor.  I figure, no time like right now.  Sometimes the giving human laughs but sometime they look like they have never seen a picky dog before.  Humans are funny.

So this day I took my humans to the good smelling town of Cambria, we drove in this thing human Ray calls a bus.  It just looks like a big box to me with wheels to move down the road.  Now the thing about the bus is that is really noisy and really uncomfortable.  How do I know this?  Each time human Ray and I ride the bus he tells me so.  I thought it was fine, but human Ray told me different.

The big change this bus ride is how we got on the bus.  Everyone else got on by walking in the tall door, like we did last time we rode.  But this day we waited by this big door that magically open up and came down to me!  I guess the bus knew I was now ONE-YEAR-OLD and deserved a special way to get on the bus.

You know, sometimes it's special being a big one-year-old girl puppy!
