Daisy's Thoughts

This week found Daisy and I in the middle of developing her listening skills.  She is in her final weeks of training as we gear up to transition from our home in California to her new family in Utah.

There are a number of factors to determine Daisy’s readiness to begin work for her client.  One of those factors is Daisy’s ability to understand her client as she gives commands. Over the past 10 months Daisy has primarily listened to me, hearing my voice over and over.  Although Daisy has others who talk to her and ask her to perform tasks, I want to make sure Daisy’s transition to her new family is seamless.

To accomplish this task, each day for the past month Daisy has been listening to and watching a 6-minute video of her client. It’s not something I force her to do, I just want her to hear and see her client so it becomes natural in Daisy’s world.  Most of the time Daisy does stop to watch her client.

The ending segment of the video contains her client giving commands.  Daisy is starting to respond to these without much help from me.  I’ll continue this process each day in various ways so Daisy becomes comfortable with her client’s voice and pattern of speaking.

In the first part of the video, I’m still assisting Daisy to respond to the commands.  Later, she is taking the commands directly from the client but is still checking with me for approval.  Eventually, I’ll be out of Daisy’s point-of-view as not to influence her.

The majority of our time spent together is spent reviewing and practicing previously learned skills.  Although Daisy has learned skills, she still needs to review and practice them.

Daisy's Digs
A Puppies' Point of View
                                        By Daisy D.

This was a strange week for sure!  I'm not sure why, but human Stacy went away to her sister's place.  I've never met her sister as a real human. I did see the human sister one day, but she was really small!  So small that she fit into the little picture box that human Stacy talks to all of the time.  Human Stacy never said anything about her sisters size to me, but I do understand people, like dogs, are all different sizes.  When I saw her sister in the little box she was pretty cute being so small but still looking like a real person.  But as strange as that seems human Stacy having a tiny little bitty sister sounds, there's more!  Her tiny sister lives in the little picture talking box with her children!  And you know what?  One of them is even smaller than the human sister!  And they all live in the little box!

So today was even more, much more amazing for me.  After I was finished in the kennel during the long dark, I saw human Stacy on the little box.  She was right in there with the tiny human sister and the even smaller children!  So how did she do that?  How did human Stacy get so small?  I looked all around the little box to see if there was a special door or something that I could open and join human Stacy in the little box, but no door.

My only question now is, when will human Stacy leave her tiny sisters place and be big again in my house?

You know, sometimes it's still confusing being a big one-year-old girl puppy!
